As members of IAM, you will have all the support and resources you need to bargain your first collective agreement. It’s an exciting process that begins with a members’ meeting where you decide your bargaining priorities – the things that are most important to you to achieve in a first contract. These will include monetary items like wages, benefits and sick days, as well as important workplace rights and a process to resolve workplace disputes.
One of the first things we do is evaluate your current compensation with the wages and benefits our current members receive. This establishes the goal we must reach and sets a benchmark for us. Recently, at a company whose workers joined the IAM, they received an automatic raise of more than $2 per hour!
You will also select your own bargaining committee. Together, your new bargaining committee and an experienced union negotiator will hold a series of meetings with your employer to negotiate the terms of your first collective agreement.
Once the bargaining committee reaches a tentative agreement with your employer, you will receive a full report explaining the proposed terms of the contract. And because you are a member of a democratic union, you and your co-workers will vote on whether or not to accept the agreement that has been negotiated on your behalf.
